A Russian ship has sent 6 squads of rifles and 2 guns with crew into the hinterland on a punitive expedition. 3 squads of veteran home guards wait for them in ambush at one of the first settlements.Can the Russians get more squads off the opposite edge of the board than they take in casualties and can they secure three of the four buildings by the end of the game? |
| Facing east: The Russian right wing advances on a brick structure, one of the four objectives. |

| Facing east: The Russian center begins picking through the various trade goods stacked up outside of the storage house. |
 |
| Facing east: A Russian gun crew makes up the closest portion of the left wing as they advance casualy down the road. |
 |
| Facing south: Suddenly armed townsfolk raise up from the wheat field and begin to fire on the center of the column! |
 |
| Facing south: More men appear at the opening shots and add their fire from the graveyard and church! |
 |
| Facing west: The Russian columns freeze in a moment of confusion. When the bullets begin to strike them they scatter! |
 |
| Facing west: The Russian riflemen return ineffective fire! |
 |
| Facing northwest: The Russian center seen from the block house to the south. |
 |
| Facing south: The Russian left wing finally finishes moving onto the board! The gun crew unlimber and bring their gun into action sweeping a number of the militia away with canister and shell fire! |
 |
| Facing south: After a fierce crossfire all of the militia in the field and grave yard become casualties but not without inflicting severe casualties on their attacker! |
 |
| Facing south: Another band of militia appear in the building to the rear of the Russian advance and wipe out the closest guncrew who had not been able to fire a single shot! |
 |
| Facing west: Having taken the church and out building the Russians suddenly realize that they have a well entrenched enemy to their rear! |
 |
| Facing north: At the brick house to the house another band of defenders pours volley after volley into their attackers! The Russians fall but make repeated charges to gain the building! |
 |
| Facing north: The Russians again attempt to swarm the building! |
 |
| Facing west: The defenders fire at point blank range and repel them for a fourth time! |
 |
| Facing south: The gun crew on the extreme Russian left obeys orders yelled to them from the church at top left to shell the building containing the remaining defenders! |
 |
| Facing west: The Russians begin to mass from the outbuilding at bottom into the church at center. They cna see the enemy at top and their fallen comrades strewn in the yard between them. It looks hopeless - but surprise! The first volley of their fire catches the enemy completely exposed and more than half fall! |
 |
| Facing north: A surviving Russian runs from the brick house to the south only to be shot down by a single bullet. |
 |
| Facing south: The gun crew continue to work their gun and further reduce the defenders to a mere shattered few! |
 |
| Facing east: With a last volley and a fierce yell the Russians successfully storm back across the killing field to secure the storage building! |
 |
| Facing north: The defenders in the brick house to the house can only watch helplessly as the Russians secure their third building and thus a minor victory. They brielfy discuss attempting to retake the church but it is quickly dismissed. Hopes that the Russians are foolish enough to assault them also fade once no sign of an attack is detected. |
 |
| Facing south: Badly mauled but still in control of the town the Russian column will hold the buildings they have and await rienforcements. Then they will decide if it is wise to continue their assault inland! |
