When Darkness Falls (Fall In '04)

A blood thirsty band of native slavers has captured several prominent europeans and spirited them off to their hideout deep in the great swamp.

The colonial powers in the region attempt to rescue the captives and gain influence. Although the Boers, Arabs, French, Russians, 1 U.S. Marines and Sailors, British, and ex-Confederates are on the same time they each try and make sure they are the ones who get the credit.
Facing south: A poor picture but you can see the various colonial powers along the bottom edge nearing the tall grass surrounding the slavers' den. On the far side the remaining half of the rescuers approached to cut off any hope of retreat or escape for the slavers.
Facing north-west: As the rescuers made their way through the tall grass they were set upon by native spearmen hiding in ambush. These natives were few in number but caused much carnage at such close range. For a moment there was much yelling and screaming with bullets slicing the air over head. When the smoke cleared all the natives and a good number of rescuers were casualties.

Once this initial trial was dealt with our friends discover the remainder of the natives mixxed in with several civilian captives behind low stone walls and guarding a sturdy log cabin.

How does one free civilians mixxed in with captives? Let's ask the
the commander who first counts up how many bad guys are present, then taking into consideration how many hostages in proportion, fires a volley or two until he decides it has become "too dangerous" to repeat the process. Amazingly enough this succeeded without killing the innocent (although the British managed to pick off a "friendly" Arab while repeating this process on the other side of the cabin - "Oops! Sorry old chap, poor form and all that, whot?").

In the end it was a bloody and fierce hand to hand storming of the
walls and grabbing of the civilian prisoners (who managed to
actually fight off their rescuers once or twice in the confusion!)
with several natives captured and all civilians set free (really a
miracle - like a surgeon using a wood saw to do brain surgery and
nothing went wrong). Come to find out the "Big Chief" is a British
mercenary who has some explaining to do (not what was he doing but rather why wasn't he paying off the officals like he should have
been).

In the end I scored the event thus:
+1 Each native eliminated
+3 Each civilian rescued
+5 For elimination of the "Big Chief"
-1 For each 'other ranks' casualty (to your unit or caused by you)
-3 for each officer casualty (to your unit or caused by you)
-5 for each civilian killed

End sum results were:

( 0 ) Russians - Minor Defeat
( -1 ) U.S. Marines - Minor Defeat
